Difference between Digital and Ink-tank Printer

Hi all, Welcome to Tints and Toons! This blog is about the difference between Digital and ink tank printing is not going to be a lengthy post. It is going to be brief and main difference one should understand before buying the printers for their stationary business or personal use.

There was a Print expo which happened in our Madurai city yesterday and it was a delight to be a part of it. So I came to know a few more things about printing. And one important thing which I understood is about digital printing. A lot of small businesses find difficult to understand this when starting their Art or stationary business.

One key difference is Digital printing can print on any medium like art papers, card stocks upto 300gsm. But Ink tank printing like the Epson printer (which we use for our calendar printing) uses Ink to print on photo Papers. We have listed down few other important difference between these two printing below.

Before understanding the difference, lets talk about what is meant by digital and ink tank printing.

Digital Printing is a modern way of printing where designs are sent directly from a computer to a printer, without complicated setups. It’s fast, cost-effective for small batches, and gives high-quality results, making it perfect for printing things like posters, flyers, or custom items like calendars and bookmarks. Digital printers use toners to print instead of ink..

Ink Tank printers uses Ink spray to print a design. It is ideal for high quality photos. It gives photo quality and comparatively slower and costlier than digital printing but the quality is very good especially if you want to print some art stuff like us. And by the way check out our new calendars and other stationaries listed on our website 🙂

Cost: Both Digital and Ink tank printers are available affordable rates. Color Laser printer in Canon starts at 50K Rupees range as of today. There are many 4 color Ink tank printers Epson 8180 ink tank printer which is around 40K Rupees.

Art Materials: Digital printing can be printed on any type of papers and it does leaks behind the paper sometimes (If we use less than 100gsm paper). Ink tank printers are only meant for Photos. And it does not support other materials. I try printing on vinyl sticker but it might leave black ink marks in the corner of the paper.

Quality: They both are good in quality. However, the vibrancy and details of a photograph or an illustration can be printed better using a ink tank printer. Digital printing is good for bulk printing of greeting cards, invitations, product tag card, Thank you card, posters etc. Basically different art paper mediums will be compatible in Digital Printing

So in conclusion, firstly decide the purpose of your purchase, and then go for it. No printer can solve all the problem. 🙂 If you want to read more about how I chose my printer, read this article – How I chose Printer for my art business
